Deriving from the Afrikaans word meaning "separateness", it was a brutal segregationist policy enforced by the National Party from the year 1948 causing infrastructure, amenities and even relationships to be segregated and divided between races- Whites, Blacks and even Indians.
It was made illegal to even date or marry people from a different race back then which is stupid because, technically, we are all from the same race.
Well, that sounds horrible, right? So, what people do? They protested.
And what did the government do? They cracked down on that. Violently. But, the people never gave up and kept fighting for their freedom.
One of them was the one, the only and a man who not only changed history but caused an odd phenomenon to be named after him (2)-
Nelson Mandela.
From the efforts of many strong and fearless protestors and activists and many years later towards the end of the 20th century(1), the apartheid system was finally abolished and South Africa could finally be free to act, move and represent themselves politically and Nelson Mandela was released from prison.
(1) (the 1900s, for those who are confused with the numbering. Yes, I hear you. I see you.)
(2) The Mandela effect. Did I really have to explain this one?
