Patagonia Giants, Argentina
There is a suggested theory that when European explorers reached Argentina's southern part, they met really tall native people who were around 6 foot tall compared to the Europeans' average height of 5 feet.
This probably made them assume that they met actual giants on this new land that they named "Patagons" and later caused the land to be named "Patagonia"
Obviously, some people decided to make many conspiracy theories about a different race existing there which, hey, could be possible but we don't have enough evidence yet. At least, I'm not sure and wanted to find a proper explanation to this instead of resorting to conspiracies.
