The Ancient Indian method of rock-carving

This was a technique that I have observed during my travels to the southern part of India (in a region called Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu.)
And as mentioned earlier in this blog, this place is a place of great historical significance being a major port town of the Chola Empire.

Step 1: Drill small holes along a desired line on the rock

Step 2: Place wooden wedges inside the holes

Step 3: Soak the wooden wedges in water (sometimes, hot water)

Step 4: Observe and wait for the wooden wedges to expand

Step 5: Now, you can use other tools to easily carve it out
